Discovering & Deploying Our Potential

Have you ever experienced your full potential in something you enjoy? It may be finding your potential in your work place, or on the athletic field. Perhaps someone once said to you, “I think you should try music because I think you have potential.”

On the other hand, how often have you wondered if you have fully reached your potential in something? Or additionally, how often have you longed to be more effective and efficient in what you do, causing you to doubt your potential and ability to accomplish a task? How often have you felt that your efforts have been sub-par, below everyone’s expectations including your own?

If so, you are not alone, for as national surveys indicate, a majority of Americans feel they have fallen short of both their expectation of themselves and their potential.

As the individual who professes Christ as personal Savior and Lord, our potential in fulfilling God’s plans and purposes for our life can be discovered in and through our relationship with Christ. Very simply, God has created each of us to make a difference! We do so when we deploy our discovered potential in the daily activities of our lives. One does not need to “make the headlines” in order to become significant or to make a difference in someone’s life. We simply need to discover the power of “one.”

This spring (following Easter), I plan to teach an 8 week series each Sunday morning on this very important subject. As we face all kinds of situations in life where God wants us to make a difference, consider what Dr. Michael Youssef has said, “Change nearly always comes down to one person taking initiative and becoming a positive presence in a negative situation.” That, my friends, is a word of encouragement for each of us!

In striving to discover and deploy our potential in our daily walk of life, we begin to effect others in God’s strength, not our own. Dr. Youssef insightfully adds, “The power of one Christian is never limited to that person’s abilities, intelligence, skills, or personality. Rather, a Christian is a person who is vitally linked to an unlimited God.”

So be encouraged this day, for God wants to un-tap your potential and use you to influence others for His glory and kingdom. Will you let me do it? As you do, your life will reach a whole new level of effectiveness and joy! Remember, God has a plan and purpose for you!

Serving a God of potential,

Pastor John
